A word. An expression. A smile. A touch. A memory. A thousand memories…
Friendship.
A bond. An assurance. A fragrance.
It’s hard to define these two words when you have only words to depend on. It’s like defining a slice of sunshine that melts on your shoulder on a rare winter noon; the touch of a mother’s hand; the hug of a comforting sister; the shoulder-ride on a lazy afternoon with father; a walk down the road with a loved one; the matchless pranks planned with friends. Deep within, you know what they mean, but you can’t express them like you would like to, for all the world.
Friendship is a presence that defies the boundaries of time and space –a presence that you can only be thankful for; a presence that you celebrate in your heart. There is no single day for friendship. Everyday is a day for a friend. Just like everyday is your day – a celebration for the special person that is You. But once in a while we like to celebrate everything that makes life special, meaningful. And once in a while we like to do just that and nothing else. So we have kept one special day aside for one of the most special parts of our life – and we call it Friendship Day. A day to acknowledge. To reach out. To feel good. Very, very good.
Friendship Day is a day for love. For friendship, that goes beyond love. And yes, friends are not just the ones who went with you to school, bunked classes together in college, lent a voice when the Principal had to talk to your father over phone for a not-to-be-very-proud-of reason. Or the ones who lent you all the notes the night before the finals, put up with the nagging sniffles after you had the very painful eleventh break-up, suffered the worst of your mood swings and still understood. Yes, those. But also a lot more who you may not have considered in the same bracket – all those who have been a silent, persistent presence. All those you would like to thank for making a difference. A sister. An aunt. A grandma. Your parents. Friendship is the cornerstone of every relationship that has a name – and some that hasn’t.
How nice it would be to reach out. To turn their face to us and smile back. To tell them, ‘I can’t thank you enough, but here I am. On this day, all my thoughts, all my wishes, all my prayers – for you.’ To capture a little portion of the color and fragrance that they have been and give it back. A field of daffodils. A bunch of roses. A bouquet of lilies. Pinks. Lavenders. Pale blues. Bright reds. Nothing can talk for you better than a bunch of fresh, soft, smiling flowers. A slice of the rainbow for your friend.
