One such unique flower is the Anthurium. Anthuriums originally belong to tropical America, with close to 800 species found in northern Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay. Other common names of this heart-shaped flower are Flamingo Lily, Painted Tongue and Flamingo Flower. The flower is a modified leaf which flares out from the fleshy spike where the actual flowers grow. The stem reaches to a length of about 20 inches depending on the leaf’s size: the bigger the leaf, the longer the stem. Birds of Paradise are also called Crane Flowers and they bloom between September and May. The foliage is similar to banana leaves and has long petioles. The leaves of the plant follow a strict two rank arrangement to form a thick, glossy green crown making it an ideal ornamental plant. The Birds of Paradise plants usually grow 4 feet tall.

They look like arrowheads, with silver or white speckles.

This year, the monsoons have arrived on time. Kerala, on the southern coast, received its first rains of the season on Saturday, June 1. The Indian Meteorological Department also confirmed that large parts of adjoining Tamil Nadu witnessed rains, reinforcing the fact that the monsoon is finally upon us. Last year, the monsoon came to Kerala four days after the June 1 forecast. But it was a good season, with bumper harvests, especially of rice, cotton and sugar. Surplus production of cotton led to robust exports while sugar output exceeded demand. Other parts of India will experience the rainy season by the second week of June.

Republic Day

January 26^th holds a special meaning for all Indians across the globe. It marks India’s Republic Day, the date on which the Indian Constitution was formed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The Constitution for the world’s largest democracy was drafted and put into force on this day and is celebrated in India with much gusto. It replaced the Government of India Act 1935 as the document that governed India on January 26, 1950. The main parade happens in New Delhi, the national capital, at the Rajpath, in the presence of the President of India. At other state capitals, the anniversary is celebrated with similar enthusiasm, but on a much smaller scale.  Here, the Governor of the state hoists the national flag, followed by other cultural festivities.
